A slade is a 'small valley'. Samuel Lewis's 1848 Topographical Dictionary of England states that 'modern detached houses stand at Erdington Slade on the road to Witton', while The National Gazetteer of Great Britain & Ireland, published twenty years later describes them as being on the road to Castle Bromwich.

It is difficult to reconcile the two, as the routes to Witton and to Castle Bromwich head west and east respectively. The former is probably the more reliable and Erdington Slade is probably what is now known as Slade Road - see Witton (Slade).
