In Old English the word slaed meant a 'little valley', probably broad and possibly boggy. The term carries the implication of a swathe of grassland between two contrasting features, perhaps two woods, hills or arable fields. Slade Road now follows the valley from Stockland Green down to Salford Bridge.

Also known as Erdington Slade, and see Witton Slade.
